The Long Goodbye

I hate goodbyes. I hate it with a burning passion of ten thousand suns. I hate it even more when I am the one who is being left behind. I hate having people around me the day before or an hour before and then suddenly having... no one.

Two of my friends from back home left G-town today. We only know each other for a couple of months, but it felt like I was saying goodbye to two of my very dear friends. There's something about living in a foreign country that makes you even more attached to the things or people from back home. We come from the same culture, we have similar sense of humor, and that made us bond quickly.

That Was Then...

When I started writing this blog, I never planned to write a serious/sad/sentimental entry. But you know how sometimes you are so overwhelmed with emotions that you just want to vent it somewhere to make you feel better? Well that is what I thought. So forgive for going all melodramatic right now. But as we all know, even the light and fluffy K-dramas have to veer towards melodramatic territory at some point, right?

I miss home. My mom. My brother. But today in particular I miss my dad. A LOT. It just one of those random times that the feeling of missing home and your loved ones suddenly swept over you. Well it's not exactly random in my case. One of my friends on Facebook just shared a link to a clip on YouTube. And what else should it be other than... Dance with My Father by Luther Vandross (Celine Dion's version). I know better that I shouldn't have listened to that song. I cried while listening to that song in a room full of people once. Imagine what kind of blubbering mess I would turn into when I listened to it by myself? Not a pretty one for sure!

Yeap.. No! I can't cry prettily with JUST one single tear rolling down my cheek

A girl does not live by latte alone. Have a spinach feta pie!

Hmmm.. My precious! Oh please, as if you never saw someone whispering "my precious" to their delicious mug of vanilla latte and spinach feta pie before.

It's Over...

Yeay! Finals is over! (I'm grinning and dancing on the inside! Wait make that doing backflips and windmill moves -it's my inside anyway!)

I just finished my last finals today and I almost didn't make it. Yes, after being paranoid all year round about missing an exam, yours truly ALMOST missed her finals this morning. What is that phrase again? self-fulfilling prophecy? I almost fulfilled that this morning. I thought the exam was going to be held at 2 pm, but thank God I text my friend to make sure about the time, and turned out it's at 10 freaking am! Can you imagine what would happen if I never asked my friend?

Finals, Coding, and Stills from Level 7 Civil Servant

I'm so happy now I just passed one of my finals this semester. To be honest, I don't think I deserve to feel THAT happy judging from the amount of time (or the lack of) I've put into preparing. Sure I lost hours and hours of my beauty sleep, but most actually went to finishing my last homework and procrastinating. Yep, me and procrastination are best friends for life. Even when I realized that I only have less than 3 days to revise for my finals, I still used that time for rewatching Gaksital.. aish, hopeless! (still it was fun though!)

The Best Things in Life are FREE!!

Yup that sentence beyond doubt summed up these couple of days. Every employee who is working around and underneath Nemangkawi mountain must be rejoicing right now as we’re spoilt with free internet access. Before I move on, I think I need to shed a light on the internet system in my office. Not everybody can access the internet from my office. Only the chosen group of people who can gain the privilege of accessing the internet. Even if you managed to gain the privilege, you still have to face the annoying internet blocks. No multiply. No facebook (oops, sorry multiply. I didn’t mean to promote other social network in your web). No downloading music.  No streaming. No fun!

So how did we manage to have a free internet access in this strict, harsh, and cold working environment? Well I would like to brag how I use an advanced command prompt to bypass the office internet blocks. I mean that would make it sounds a lot cooler. Make me feel like Sandra Bullock in The Net -minus the identity thievery and actions-. But unfortunately I’m not at that level yet. There’s been a leak in the system that allows me, and others, to have access to every site I want. Streaming. Uploading. Downloading. Browsing. Virtually having all the fun you can in cyber world.  Even subscribing an internet provider couldn’t produce this much fun. The secluded area caused us being timed out more often than actually using the internet. Therefore, here I am making the best out of this situation by writing an update on my blog after sucha long time. Am keeping my fingers crossed for another day of internet leak at the office. Might as well enjoy it while it last!

Cast Away

Man!! I can't believe that I finally can browse the internet from here.. It even can be considered as the 8th wonder of the world for me to have the internet access bearing in mind that i live in a quite secluded area (read: tembagapura) with no internet access (only intranet),and no modem to get me connected.. Pretty depressing riteee? So how did I finally manage to post this blog? Well by using my all-powerful cellphone.. Yup,that's why it takes a long time to construct a blog..

Anyway,just an update.

Chris Rice - Clumsy

You think I’d have it down by now
Been practicin’ for thirty years
I should have walked a thousand miles
So what am I still doin’ here
Reachin’ out for that same old piece of forbidden fruit
I slip and fall and I knock my halo loose
Somebody tell me what’s a boy supposed to do?
I get so clumsy
I get so foolish
I get so stupid
And then I feel so useless
But You’re sayin’ You love me
And You’re still gonna hold me
And that You wanna be near me
‘Cause You’re makin’ me holy
You’re still makin’ me holy, yeah
I’m gonna get it right this time
I’ll be strong and I’ll make You proud
I’ve prayed that prayer a thousand times
But the rooster crows and my tears roll down (again)
Then You remind me You made me from the dust
And I can never, no never, be good enough
And that You’re not gonna let that come between us
I get so clumsy
I get so foolish
I get so stupid
And then I feel so useless
But You’re sayin’ You love me
And You’re still gonna hold me
And that You wanna be near me
‘Cause You’re makin’ me holy
You’re still makin’ me holy, yeah
From where I stand
Your holiness is up so high I can never reach it
My only hope is to fall on Jesus
I get so clumsy
I get so foolish
I get so stupid
And then I feel so useless
But You’re sayin’ You love me
And You’re still gonna hold me
And that You wanna be near me
‘Cause You’re makin’ me holy
You’re still makin’ me holy, yeah
--------------------------------------------------
I feel like this song has became the soundtrack of my life this past few weeks since it is one of those songs that deals with my human weaknesses while striving to be holy. It's also a song that keep reminding me on how I make sooooo many mistakes in life but God still loves me through it all...

ATM = Awkward Tongue-tied Moment

Have u ever been standing in an ATM, minding ur own business, doing ur normal banking transaction when somebody suddenly opens the ATM door and barge in on u? Well I have, and it’s really irritating. I instantly thought, what is wrong with this person? Can’t he see that there is somebody already inside the ATM? So I hardly can’t imagine why would someone barge in on another someone inside the ATM, at least until last Wednesday where I found myself in that situation.
To set the record straight, I have no intention on barging in on someone on the ATM for the sake of wanting to know what does it feel like to be a barge inner (wait… I don’t think that’s english, but well u know what I mean rite..). I was actually tricked into doing it. Well ok….  u got me. Nobody actually tricked me into doing it. But I was totally tricked. Tricked by the situation in my campus.
It was the last week of the examination week. My campus was really quiet because most people were either having their exams or studying for em. Moi, u asked? Well, I was working hard too! I used most of my free times working hard on….. playing cards!! Bwahahaha!
Anyhow, I had just finished my presentation test and since it was almost 12 o’clock, my friends and I decided to have our lunch in this place called ‘Gelap Nyawang’ which is located in the front of my campus. It’s a really famous place. Whaaaa? U don’t believe me? Well go watch ‘Jomblo’ and see the place for urself! But halfway there, I just realized that I only got about 3000 rupians on my purse (btw, for all of u non-Indonesian people who read this, before u have this fascinating imagination about how loaded I must be, I have to remind u that 3000 rupians are not a lot, it’s probably equal to 30 cents or something like that). So I then decided to take some cash from the ATM first.
As I have mentioned before, it was an examination day and it was really quiet by the time I reached the ATM site. Honestly, it was so quiet that u could almost see those rolled straws rolling around just like in the western movies. And from the spot where I approached the ATM, I didn’t see anyone inside the ATM. So assuming that there was nobody inside the ATM, I then hastily opened the door. And to my surprise, there was this guy inside the ATM (let’s call him the-annoyed-ATM-guy) who stared back at me with this shocked/irritated looks on his face. I was stunned by this overwhelming situation. It was really awkward and it did feel like the longest 3 seconds of my life (ok, that’s an exaggeration since there were much more embarrassing/awkward situations that caused time-freeze longer than this, like the one where I accidentally went in to the men restroom in an airport. What, Maya?  What did you say?  Well it's a long story, so to to make the long story short let say that I blamed the jet lag). Anyway, after experiencing the longest 3 seconds of my life, the reality of the situation then started to kick in. So I did what a normal person would do when they found themselves in this kind of situation. I cringed, closed the ATM door without saying sorry, and immediately attempted to hide in the bushes near the ATM.
Obviously my friends then did whatever they could to help me…… by laughing at me! Well, I don’t blame them. It was a stressful/long presentation test that we’ve been through. So it must be amusing to find somebody who stupidly put herself in an awkward situation and overreacting about it. Still laughing at me, they then asked me to come out from my hiding place by calling my name -unquestionably, they’re trying to expose my identity to the-annoyed-ATM-guy. But I digressed. I kept hiding in the bushes until that annoyed-ATM-guy got out from the ATM. He then walked to the east-side of the ATM, so I decided to make my way to the ATM from the west-side to avoid him. But quarter-way walking, the-annoyed-ATM-guy then decided to go to the west-side of the ATM, turned around, and walked toward me as I was already got out from the bushes and exposed! NOOOOooo!!
So, I had no other option than just kept walking then cringed apologetically at him. And believe me, the longest 3 seconds of my life that I have confidently stated before was nothing compared to this situation. It was soooooooo awkward. By the time I reached the ATM, all of my friends laughed (again) at me. Then one of them told me that the-annoyed-ATM-guy is one of the student senators in my campus. Seems like he is a quite popular and “important” person  in my campus.
So if I put this whole situation into an analogy, for instance, if my campus were a country then I would have barged in on a senator in an ATM…. and there’d be a teeny, tiny possibility that I might get shot by the bodyguards!!! Cool Scary, huh?

Thoughts on American Idol Top 6 Result Show

Ok so this is my first post ever on American Idol. I’ve been following this show since day one, but finally I’m tickled to write one post regarding it now..
To begin with, what a shocking elimination on American Idol last night! I mean, I would never have thought that Carly is the one who’s gonna go. Overall, I genuinely thought that her performance was good. Yes, it was screechy in parts, but I think she pulled it off. And she definitely was having fun. So I was sure that it would be either Jason Castro or Brooke White who was going home last night. Jason struggled throughout his performance -well, he was ill so it’s understandable- and Brooke was an awkward disaster when she decided to start all over again. So although they are two of my favorite contestants, I genuinely believed that one of them was going to head home that night. But it turned out to be Carly. Maybe it’s the song choice. I mean JCS is indeed an upbeat song, but as a Christian I personally find the lyrics and the whole idea of the musical to be unsettling. Maybe some of the people who watch the show felt the same way too. Maybe. I dunno..
But anyhow, despite the elimination and the controversy thing. The result show was really fun to watch last night. Some of the highlights was when Ryan kissed Simon gently on his head and pretended like it didn’t mean a thing, while Simon Cowell looked at Ryan like it DID mean a thing. Well I’m sure it didn’t mean a thing, Simon. Then there’s a part where ALW gave his suggestion of love song that he should write about Paula-Simon relationship:
  1. “Time to Say Goodbye”
  2. “How Can I Say I Miss You If You Weren’t Going Away”
That was hilarious. I like the second one better though!
But the major highlights have to come from Jason Castro. I have to say that he made it an interesting show to watch last night with his laid-back attitude. The yawning part in the backstage when other contestants were clearly anxious when waiting for the announcement. And the part where he fell on his kness when finding out that Syesha was the one on the bottom two, not Brooke. The ‘train motion choo-choo’ impersonation. And to cap it off: the ‘I don’t really want to sing right now’.. That was amusing.. And although I’m pretty sure that he thought that he was gonna be the one who went home last night -well I did too!-, at least he wasn’t all that stressed up about it. Sometimes, what makes American Idol a tense show to watch is because of the facial expressions of the contestants which reveal how stressed they are. But watching Jason Castro last night was refresing.
Btw, I like the way Carly left on high note. I'm sure that she'll find success in the future with that big voice of her. And I hope David Cook will be the one who win the whole thing, not the other David..

staying awake..

I just watched ‘The Invasion’ (which is starred by Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, btw) about 2 days ago. And on one part of the movie, Craig told Kidman about ‘how one can stay awake for a week’ which I found fascinating since I want to be able to do that in order to finish typing up my undergraduate thesis –not all of them obviously, just the second and third chapter. The problem is everytime I want to do my thesis, I dunno why I always feel sleepy. I normally take a nap in order to recharge. Then after that I thought that I need to refresh my brain by doing fun things so I normally watch TV. Then watch some movies which I already watched before. Then web around the internet. Then click the refresh button over and over and over again and feel good about it. Then… Hang on.. maybe the sleeping part is not my real problem. Maybe I should just stop procrastinating and do whatever I’m supposed to do, which is typing up my undergraduate thesis…

You know what makes me feel blessed everytime I wake up in the morning? Well apart from the fact that God has given me another opportunity to live, I also feel blessed when I receive some nice, thoughtful, encouraging text messages from my friends. The 'F' Word

Hold those thoughts people.. I’m not talking about the usual ‘F’ word (yup, it is that word that instantly popped into your mind.. and don’t pretend like you didn’t know what word I’m talking about ). I’m actually talking about the new ‘F’ words, which is (drum roll, please) FORGIVENESS. Why did I decide to write this oh-so-serious-not-to-mention-profound topic? Well actually I was inspired (like always) by one of the episodes from the awe-inspiring Oprah Winfrey Show titled "The F Word". It’s originally aired on May 2007 but Metro TV just aired the episode last Saturday -they might have shown it earlier, but I might have missed it.

So the story that inspired me to write this topic is went like this:
In November 1995, while taking a nap at a friend's house, Jackie awoke to find then 16-year-old Craig Sussek and 15-year-old Josh Briggs in the garage trying to steal her car. The teens forced Jackie inside and told her to lie on the floor. Craig placed a pillow over Jackie's head and left her for dead after shooting her at point-blank range. The teens fled, and Jackie's friend discovered her minutes later.
Doctors told Jackie's family she had only a 2 percent chance of survival. After spending six weeks in a coma, Jackie awoke with severe brain injuries. For the next nine months, Jackie lived in a rehabilitation center, where she had to learn how to talk, eat, walk and even swallow again.
Jackie is now partially paralyzed on the right side of her body, which causes intense pain. "I liken it to a thousand needles on my right side. It is constant," she says. Her speech is impaired and she is legally blind. Everyday actions, like tying her shoes, are still a challenge for Jackie. "When I was shot, that changed everything. They took away everything," she says. "But I got it back."
Despite the physical struggles she faces as a result of the shooting, Jackie says she forgives her attackers. "I think I would be nuts if I hadn't forgave them," she says. "I forgave them immediately so I could get on with my life." (from Oprah.com)
Pretty inspiring right and it did strike a chord in me. I’m the smallest kid in my family. So, by nature I’m the most stubborn. Whenever someone in my family said something that annoys me, I’ll resort to no-speaking mode. I have hard time in forgiving or asking for forgiveness. I liked to nurse my bitterness against that someone a lil longer because I thought by doing that I can make them hurt in the same way that I was hurt (have I mention how stubborn I am?). I felt like I'm empowering myself by holding onto the grudge. But just like what was said on her show: ”Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die" (Anne Lamott). And that’s exactly what I feel when I hold a resentment. It’s eating me inside. Not only did I hurt the other person, but I also hurt myself.
So after watching the show, it was like a wake up call for me. I normally got upset just because something that someone said or did to me (often, jokingly). Or complains about small things, and aches, and pains. But this woman, she instantly forgave the man who nearly killed him and left her in the state which she is in now -which is incredibly inspiring.
So, the most chin-strokingly questions that kept poking in my mind.. How to forgive people who’ve wronged you? I mean, It’s easy to say ‘I forgive you’, but how to ease that bitterness that is still lingering in my heart even after I’ve said that I forgave them? Is there some kind of step-by-step program that I can take in order to do that? Well after doing some meticulous research (actually I just type the word ‘forgiving’ on the invicible Google), I have to say that I did come across some interesting articles regarding this matter. One of them imposes me to write a letter to the person that I'm angry at but not sending them. So what do you do to the letter if you don’t send them then, you ask? Well, there are several things that the article suggests:
  1. You can burn it. Although if you are a walking disaster like me, I would not recommend this option. I mean judging from my antics I might ended up setting fire to my house, burn it down, and then wind up blaming the person I wrote the letter to, thus hating the person more, and that’s not in the spirit of forgiving, isn’t it?
  2. You can bury it. Although it’s kinda risky because there’s a teeny tiny possibility that the person that you wrote the letter to might found it, and therefore she/he will wind up hating you for writing such letter after you said that you forgive her/him.
  3. You can shred and then eat it. The article didn't really suggest you to do it, it's just me trying to take the options to the next level. I mean, shredding and eating thing, it's just so top-secrety, you know. (notice: not recommended for kids and people with digestion problem).
Whatever option you choose, it doesn’t matter, because the bottom line is you’ve channeled your feelings through the writing and thus help you ease those bitter feelings. That way, you’ll be able to let go and move on with your life.
So is there someone that you haven’t forgiven yet? Don’t wait any longer. Stop drinking the rat poison. Stop looking back at the ‘small’ things that they have done to you -compared to nearly being killed by some stranger, some of the wrongs that someone did to me look pretty trivial now . Just forgive that person. Alleviate those bitter feelings. Then you can let go and move on with your wonderful life . I have. And it felt good .

“The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” --Mahatma Gandhi
